Dusi Canoe Marathon 2022
7th Overall for Ross & Hamish
The Dusi is held every year starting at Pietermartizburg and finishing on the beach front at Blue Lagoon three days later. A distance of roughly 100km is covered by the paddlers over this period.
The first two days the weather gods played their part with it being cool and cloudy, however the final day starting at Inanda Dam the sun was out and temperatures were high. As is tradition, the final day start times are reversed, so the top ranking paddlers head off last. This means there is a real vibe at the finish line and spectators to cheer the pros in. Ross and Hamish were siting comfortable in the top ten, but the question around camp was were they going to race aggressively to try climb higher up the rankings, or remain calm to hold position? Heading off at 11am they reached the dam wall 20 minutes later and arrived at the first portage with two other teams. It looked like a good race was upon them. From an seconders point of view the team looked strong, raced sensibly and had no hiccups along the route. Even the infamous rapid ‘Pumphouse’ was no issue and they sailed through this final test of the day. Paddling across the finish line in a time of 2h28:50min they had secured a 7th place overall, and incredibly a first place position in the u23 category.
